Proton therapy centres abroad

Most Canadians who receive proton therapy are treated abroad. Most go to the United States, then to Europe and Asia. These centres are licensed and supervised by their countries’ health authorities. Many are also accredited by international quality bodies.

Proton therapy is available in about twenty countries. Operating centres are found in countries including the United States, Japan, Germany, Czechia, Switzerland, and Austria. The list continues with Italy, the Netherlands, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, South Korea, China, Taiwan, and India. PTCOG, the international body that tracks these centres, publishes the current world list.

A provincial or territorial plan may approve out-of-country funding. That approval is for treatment at a centre outside Canada. The centre is decided with your treating team. Where funding applies, the choice also follows your plan’s requirements. Whether a centre suits your case is a medical judgment. That judgment belongs to your treating team.
